What is a root canal?
A root canal is a substance inside a tooth. The root canal is essentially the dental nerve, which is responsible for delivering nutrients to the tooth. The root canal makes the tooth exceptionally strong. The root canal is inside the tooth and is very well sealed. Therefore, root canals are generally not subject to bacterial infection. But patients brush their teeth often and like to eat sweets. Bacteria can then destroy the tooth and get inside the tooth. Subsequently, the bacteria can infect the root canal.
What is a crown?
A crown is originally an uneven surface on a tooth that is exceptionally strong. However, during root canal treatment, the dentist uses an electric drill to drill away the surface of the tooth. The root canal procedure destroys the original crown of the tooth. In order for the dentist to keep the tooth “working”, a false crown needs to be made. A prosthetic crown is the same structure as a real tooth crown. The crown works well with the rest of the tooth.
Root canal and crown connection
Bacteria have infected the root canal. The patient feels a lot of pain in the tooth. The dentist gives the patient a root canal treatment in order to solve the pain. During root canal treatment, the dentist drills through the surface of the tooth. At this point, the native crown of the tooth is destroyed. The root canal loses the protection of the native crown. It is easier for bacteria to infect the root canal. Therefore, in order to better protect the root canal, the tooth is placed with a new crown. The crown will block the bacterial attack and protect the root canal.
Types and prices of dental crowns
There are many types of dental crowns. The price of dental crowns can vary depending on the material. Dental crowns can be divided into two categories in terms of material. One type is metal crowns and the other is porcelain crowns. There are two types of metal crowns, one is the nickel-cadmium alloy crown, which costs $80. The other is the gold alloy crown, which costs $300. The specific price is based on the actual amount of material. There are also two types of porcelain crowns, one is nickel-cadmium porcelain crown, the price is 150 USD, and the other is gold alloy porcelain crown, the price is 350 USD.
Drawbacks of crowns
All crowns are permanently fixed. If a patient wants to remove a denture crown, the only way to do so is to destroy the crown. Metal crowns are cheaper, but metal crowns can turn teeth black. Porcelain crowns do not turn the tooth black, but are expensive. Regardless of the type of crown, there is one fatal flaw.
In order for a patient to wear a crown, he or she needs to grind down half of the two adjacent teeth. In other words, the patient has to sacrifice two good teeth in order to wear the crown. Thanks to advances in dentistry, a new technology has emerged in dentistry – the dental crown veneer. The crown veneer allows for better crown function without damaging the adjacent teeth.
The crown is the protector of the root canal During root canal surgery, the dentist’s manipulation can damage the crown. The root canal loses the protection of the crown and is exceptionally weak. It is widely believed that the crown is the “guardian” of the root canal.
