Number of visits for root canal treatment
The time spent on treatment is dependent on the complexity of the tooth. The time taken for the procedure is also related to the skill of the surgeon as well as the medical equipment. In general, the procedure takes about 20 minutes for the front teeth and 30-40 minutes for the back molars. The entire treatment takes half a month. Patients need to go to the clinic three times, about a week apart each time.
Amount of time spent per visit
On the first visit, the dentist will first seal the root canal with inactivating medication, which is a milk tooth inactivator that kills the pulp due to dehydration; the first visit, the dentist will need to assess the condition of the tooth and drill through it. As a result, this procedure is the longest and will take about an hour.
On the second visit, the dentist will perform root canal preparation. The pulp is completely removed and a large amount of antiseptic solution is poured into the pulp chamber. The pulp cavity is thoroughly cleaned. Finally, the dentist uses a root canal needle to test the length of the canal for the next root canal filling. The procedure is mainly sterile and takes an average of 25 minutes.
On the third visit, the dentist will insert a root canal filling into the pulp cavity of the tooth. During this process, the dentist will repeat the insertion of the cement into the tooth to see if the cement matches the shape of the root canal. The dentist will also determine the length of the root canal based on the curvature of the gum. After the dentist fills the root canal, the canal will be completely sealed. Bacteria will be prevented from continuing to attack the tooth. This visit requires the dentist to constantly adjust the material, so the procedure takes longer than the second visit, which takes about 40 minutes on average.
Duration of one root canal treatment
With advances in medicine, it is now indeed possible to have a single root canal treatment. The dentist turns three steps into one, completing the entire root canal in one visit. A single root canal treatment takes about 2 hours. However, the patient needs to keep the mouth open for a long period of time and the mouth muscles can get injured.
